Story of Vat Savitri Vrat:
Rajarshi Ashwapati had a child, whose name was Savitri. Savitri was married to Ashwapati's son Satyavan. Narad ji had told Ashwapati about the virtues of Satyavan and being a godly soul. But he was also told that Satyavan would die only after 1 year of marriage. The father explained a lot to Savitri but he said that she would marry only Satyavan and not anyone. Satyavan lived in the forest with his parents. After marriage, Savitri also started living with him. The time of Satyavan's death had already been told, so Savitri started fasting in advance. When the day of Satyavan's death came, he started going to the forest to cut wood. Savitri said that I will also go to the forest with you. As soon as Satyavan started climbing the tree in the forest, he felt severe pain on his head and he came down from the tree and lay down with his head on Savitri's lap. After some time Savitri saw that Yamraj's messengers had come to take Satyavan. Savitri started following Yamraj behind. When Yamraj saw that someone was coming after him, he stopped Savitri and said that you were on earth till Satyavan, now Satyavan has to travel alone. Savitri said wherever my husband goes, I will go after him, this is religion. Yamraj was very pleased with Savitri's virtuous religion and asked him to ask for a boon. Savitri asked for the light of her mother-in-law's eyes. Yamraj gave a boon and went ahead. Savitri is back again. Then asked to ask for another boon, then Savitri said, "I want my father-in-law's lost palace to be returned. Yamraj went ahead by giving this boon. After that again she followed Savitri. Then Yamraj gave Savitri another boon. Where to ask then he said that give me the boon of 100 sons of Satyavan. Yamraj returned Satyavan's life by giving this boon.
