Sankashta Chaturthi – 28 March

(Moonrise: 09:24 pm)

What is Sankashta Chaturthi?

Sankashta Chaturthi means the Chaturthi that overcomes the crisis. Sankashta is a word taken from the Sanskrit language, which means 'to get relief from difficult times'.

On this day a person worships Ganapati to get rid of his sorrows. According to the Puranas, worshiping Gauri's son Ganesha on Chaturthi day is very fruitful. On this day people keep fast from the time of sunrise till the time of moonrise. On Sankashta Chaturthi, Ganapati is worshiped with full rituals.

Sankashta Chaturthi puja method

People who have faith in Ganesha keep fast on this day, please him, and wish for their desired results.

On this day, you should wake up early in the morning before sunrise.

People observing fast should first take a bath and wear clean and washed clothes. Wearing red colored clothes on this day is considered very auspicious and it is also said that doing so makes the fast successful.

After bathing, they should start worshiping Ganapati. While worshiping Ganapati, the person should keep his face towards the east or north.

First of all, decorate the idol of Ganapati properly with flowers.

During the puja, keep sesame seeds, jaggery, laddus, flowers in a copper urn, water, incense, sandalwood, and banana or coconut as prasad.

Keep in mind that during the puja, you should also keep the idol or statue of Goddess Durga with you. Doing this is considered very auspicious.

Apply Roli to Ganpati, and offer flowers and water.

On Sankashti, offer sesame laddus and modaks to Lord Ganesha.

Light incense and a lamp in front of Ganapati and chant the following mantra.

Gajananam bhoot ganadi sevatam, kapittha jambu phal charu bhakshanam.

Umasutam Shoka Vinashkarakam, Namami Vighneshwar Paad Pankajam.

After the puja, consume fruits and other prasad.

Before the moon rises in the evening, worship Lord Ganesha and recite Sankashta Vrat Katha.

Distribute Prasad after the puja is over. The fast is broken after seeing the moon at night and thus the fast of Sankashta Chaturthi is completed.

Thursday Special

If every Thursday a little bit of pure raw cow's milk is poured into the Tulsi plant, Goddess Lakshmi becomes permanent in that house and the devotion to the Guru becomes permanent in the heart of the person who worships the Guru by fasting on Thursdays.

On Thursday, worship the mango tree, the symbol of Devguru Brihaspati, in the following way:

Take a pot of water, add gram dal, jaggery, kumkum, turmeric, and rice, and offer it to the root of the mango tree while reciting the following mantra.

Om Aim Clean Brihaspataye Namah.

ॐ ऐं क्लीं बृहस्पतये नमः ।

Then while reciting the above mantra, circumambulate the mango tree five times and pray that devotion and love for Guru increases. Add some jaggery or gram flour sweets to the ants.
