There are descriptions of many curses in Sanatan mythological texts. There is definitely some story behind every curse. Today we will tell you 24 such famous curses and the story behind them.
#1..Yudhishthira's curse on women: –
According to Shanti Parva of Mahabharata, after the war ended when Kunti told Yudhishthir that Karna was his elder brother, the Pandavas felt very sad. Then Yudhishthir also performed the last rites of Karna according to the rituals. When Mother Kunti told the secret of Karna's birth to the Pandavas, Yudhishthir, in grief, cursed the entire female race - from now on, no woman will be able to keep a secret.
#2..Rishi Kindam's curse to King Pandu:-
According to Mahabharata, once King Pandu went to the forest for hunting. There he saw a pair of deer having sex and shot arrows at them. In reality that deer and hindi were sage Kindam and his wife. Then sage Kindam cursed King Pandu that whenever he will have intercourse with any woman. At that very moment you will die. Due to this curse, King Pandu died while he was having intercourse with his wife Madri.
#3..Sage Mandavya's curse to Yamraj: –
According to Mahabharata, there was a sage named Mandavya. The king mistakenly found him guilty of theft and sentenced him to crucifixion. When he did not die even after being crucified for a few days, the king realized his mistake and apologized to Sage Mandavya and released him.
Then the sage approached Yamraj and asked him what crime I had committed in my life that I was punished for such a false accusation. Then Yamraj told that when you were 12 years old, you had pricked a hornet's tail, as a result of which you had to suffer this pain.
Then sage Mandavya told Yamraj that at the age of 12 no one has the knowledge of right and wrong. You have given a big punishment for a small crime. Therefore I curse you that you will have to be born as a slave son in a Shudra species. Due to this curse of Rishi Mandavya, Yamraj took birth as Mahatma Vidur.
#4..Nandi's curse to Ravana:-
According to Valmiki Ramayana, once Ravana went to Kailash to meet Lord Shankar. There he saw Nandiji and made fun of his appearance and called him having a face like a monkey. Then Nandiji cursed Ravana that he would be destroyed only because of the monkeys.
#5..Kadru's curse on his sons: –
According to Mahabharata, sage Kashyap had two wives named Kadru and Vinata. Kadru was the mother of snakes and Vinata was the mother of Garuda. Once Kadru and Vinata saw a white horse and placed a bet. Vinata said that this horse is completely white and Kadru said that the horse is white, but its tail is black.
To prove his point right, Kadru told his snake sons that all of you should go in subtle form and stick to the tail of the horse, so that its tail appears black and I win the bet. Some snakes did not listen to Kadru. Then Kadru cursed his sons that all of them would be burnt to ashes in Janamajeya's snake sacrifice.
#6..Urvashi's curse on Arjun: –
Before the war of Mahabharata, when Arjun went to heaven to obtain the divine weapon, there an Apsara named Urvashi became fascinated by him. Seeing this, Arjun described her as his mother. Hearing this, angry Urvashi cursed Arjun that he was talking like an impotent. Therefore you will become impotent, you will have to live as a dancer among women. When Arjun told this to Devraj Indra, he said that this curse will help you during your exile and no one will be able to recognize you.
#7..Tulsi's curse on Lord Vishnu: -
According to Shivpuran, there was a demon named Shankhchud. His wife's name was Tulsi. Tulsi was devoted to her husband, due to which even the gods were unable to kill Shankhachuda. To save the gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of Shankhchud and violated Tulsi's modesty. Then Lord Shankar killed Shankhachud. When Tulsi came to know about this, he cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone. Due to this curse, Lord Vishnu is worshiped in the form of Shaligram Shila.
#8..Shrungi Rishi's curse to Parikshit: –
After the ascension of the Pandavas, Abhimanyu's son Parikshit ruled. Everyone was happy and prosperous in his kingdom. Once King Parikshit went too far while hunting. Then he saw there a sage named Shamik, who was in a silent state. King Parikshit wanted to talk to him, but being in meditation the sage did not respond.
Seeing this, Parikshit became very angry and picked up a dead snake and put it around the sage's neck. When Shamik Rishi's son Shringi came to know about this, he cursed that seven days from today the Baat Takshak snake will bite King Parikshit, which will lead to his death.
#9..King Anaranya's curse to Ravana: –
According to Valmiki Ramayana, there was a very glorious king in Raghuvansh, whose name was Anaranya. When Ravana set out to conquer the world, he had a fierce battle with King Anaranya. King Anaranya died in that war. Before dying, he cursed Ravana that a young man born in his own lineage would become the cause of his death. Lord Shri Ram was born in his lineage and killed Ravana.
#10..Para shu ram's curse to Karna: –
According to Mahabharata, Parshuram saffron Neither was he an incarnation of Vishnu. Suryaputra Karna was his disciple. Karna had introduced himself to Parashurama as a son of Suta. Once when Parashurama was sleeping with his head in Karna's lap, Karna was bitten by a terrible insect. Karna continued to bear the pain, thinking that there should be no disturbance in the Guru's sleep, but he did not wake Parashurama from his sleep. When Parshuram saw this after waking up from sleep, he understood that Karna was not a Sutaputra but a Kshatriya. Then, in anger, Parashurama cursed Karna that when he would need it the most, he would forget the knowledge of weapons taught by him.
#11..Tapaswini's curse on Ravana:-
According to Valmiki Ramayana, once Ravana was going somewhere in his Pushpak Vimana. Then he saw a beautiful woman, who was doing penance to get Lord Vishnu as her husband. Ravana held her hair and asked her to come with him. That ascetic left her body at that very moment and cursed Ravana that he would die only because of a woman.
#12..Gandhari's curse to Shri Krishna: –
After the war of Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna came to console Gandhari, seeing the destruction of her sons, Gandhari cursed Shri Krishna that just as Pandavas and Kauravas were destroyed due to mutual discord, in the same way you will also kill your relatives. . Thirty-sixth year from today, you will be killed like an orphan for a simple reason when your relatives and sons are destroyed. It was due to the curse of Gandhari that Lord Krishna's family came to an end.
#13..Maharishi Vashishtha's curse on the Vasus: –
According to Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah was one of the eight Vasus in his previous birth. Once these eight Vasus forcefully kidnapped the cow of sage Vashishtha. When the sage came to know about this, he cursed the eight Vasus that all eight Vasus would have to be born in human form in the mortal world and the eighth Vasu would not get pleasures like kingship, women etc. This eighth Vasu was Bhishma Pitamah.
#14..Shurpanakha's curse on Ravana: –
According to Valmiki Ramayana, the name of Ravana's sister Shurpanakha's husband was Vidyutjiva. He was the commander of a king named Kalkeya. When Ravana went on a world war, he fought with Kalkeya. In that war Ravana killed Vidyutjiva. Then Shurpanakha cursed Ravana in her mind that because of me you will be destroyed.
#15..The curse of the sages on Samba: –
According to Mausal Parva of Mahabharata, once Maharishi Vishwamitra, Kanva etc. sages went to Dwarka. Then, in order to make fun of those sages, Saran and others took Krishna's son Samb to them in the guise of a woman and asked what would be born from the womb of this woman. Angered, the sages cursed that this son of Shri Krishna would produce a terrible iron pestle to destroy the Vrishni and Andhakavanshi men, through which the entire Yadav clan would be destroyed.
According to Shivpuran, Prajapati Daksh had got his 27 daughters married to Chandrama. Among all those wives, the wife named Rohini was most dear to Moon. The other wives did not like this. When he told this to his father Daksh, he became very angry and asked Chandrama to treat everyone equally, but Chandrama did not agree. Then, in anger, Daksha cursed the moon to suffer from tuberculosis.
#17..Maya's curse on Ravana: -
Ravana had also cheated his wife's elder sister Maya. Maya's husband was Shambhar Raja of Vyjayantpur. One day Ravana went to Shambhar's place. There Ravana trapped Maya in his words. As soon as Shambhar came to know about this, he imprisoned Ravana. At the same time, Shambhar was attacked by King Dasharatha.
Shambhar died in this war. When Maya started committing sati, Ravana asked her to come with him. Then Maya said that you, filled with lust, tried to break my chastity. That is why my husband died, hence your death will also be due to this reason.
#18..Shukracharya's curse to King Yayati: –
According to an incident in the Mahabharata, King Yayati was married to Shukracharya's daughter Devayani. Devayani had a maid named Sharmistha. Once when Yayati and Devayani were roaming in the garden, she came to know that the father of Sharmistha's sons was also King Yayati, so she got angry and went to her father Shukracharya and told him the whole story. Then the demon guru Shukracharya cursed Yayati to grow old.
#19..Curse of Brahmin couple to King Dasharatha: –
According to Valmiki Ramayana, once when King Dasharatha went to the forest to hunt, he accidentally killed a Brahmin son. The parents of that Brahmin son were blind. When he got the news of his son's death, he cursed King Dashrath that just as we are sacrificing our lives due to the separation of our son, similarly you will also die due to the separation of our son.
#20..Nandi's curse on the Brahmin clan: –
According to Shivpuran, once when all the sages, gods, Prajapati, Mahatma etc. gathered in Prayag, then Daksh Prajapati despised Lord Shankar. Seeing this, many sages also supported Daksh. Then Nandi cursed that the wicked Brahmins will consider heaven as the best and will remain shameless Brahmins filled with anger, attachment and greed. Those who perform Yagya for Shudras will be poor.
According to Valmiki Ramayana, when Ravana reached heaven to conquer the world, he met an apsara named Rambha there. Appeared. Ravana captured her to fulfill his lust. Then that Apsara said that you do not touch me like this, I am reserved for Nalakuber, son of your elder brother Kuber. That's why I am like your daughter-in-law.
But Ravana did not listen to him and molested Rambha. When Nalkuber came to know about this, he cursed Ravana that from today onwards, if Ravana touches any woman without her consent, his head will be divided into a hundred pieces.
#22..Shri Krishna's curse to Ashwatthama: –
At the end of the Mahabharata war, when Ashwatthama treacherously killed the Pandava sons, the Pandavas along with Lord Krishna followed Ashwatthama and reached the ashram of Maharishi Vedvyas. Then Ashwatthama attacked the Pandavas with Brahmastra. Seeing this, Arjun also released his Brahmastra.
Maharishi Vyas stopped both the weapons from colliding and asked Ashwatthama and Arjun to take back their Brahmastras. Then Arjun took back his Brahmastra, but Ashwatthama did not know this knowledge. Therefore he changed the direction of his weapon towards the womb of Abhimanyu's wife Uttara.
Seeing this, Lord Shri Krishna cursed Ashwatthama that you will keep wandering on this earth for three thousand years and you will not be able to talk to any man, anywhere. Your body will smell of pus and blood. Therefore you will not be able to live among humans. You will remain lying in an inaccessible forest.
#23..Tulsi's curse on Lord Ganesha :-
According to Brahmavaivarta Purana, once Tulsidevi was passing by the banks of Ganga, at that time Lord Ganesha was doing penance there. Seeing Shri Ganesh, Tulsi's mind got attracted towards him. Then Tulsi asked Shri Ganesh to become his master, but Shri Ganesh refused to marry Tulsi. Out of anger, Tulsi cursed Shri Ganesh to marry and Shri Ganesh cursed Tulsi to become a tree.
#24..Narada's curse to Lord Vishnu: –
According to Shivpuran, once Devrishi Narad became fascinated with a girl. He appeared in the form of Lord Vishnu at the Swayamvar of that girl, but due to the illusion of God, his face became like that of a monkey. Lord Vishnu also reached Swayamvar. Seeing him the girl accepted God. Seeing this, Narada Muni became very angry and cursed Lord Vishnu that the way you have made me anxious for a woman. Similarly, you will also suffer the pain of separation from your wife. Lord Vishnu in the incarnation of Ram fulfilled this curse of Narada Muni.
